On Sunday, March 10th, the Lay Witnesses for Christ International held their 30th Christian Athlete of the Year Banquet at the DFW Airport Marriott. There were 1680 female and 1700 male applicants for the Christian Athlete of the Year. Out of these, the committee selected 20 female and 20 male semi-finalists. From the 40 semi-finalists, 10 finalists for each gender were chosen.
The Highland Park High School athletes chosen as semi-finalists were: Avery Holmes - Senior – Member of the Lady Scots Cross Country, Caroline Keogh - Senior - Captain of the Lady Scots Basketball Team, and James McGinley – Senior – Member of the Scots Baseball Team (2 Year Letterman). Avery and James were also selected as finalists for the Christian Athlete of the Year Award.
Past Highland Park High School winners of the Christian Athlete of the Year Award were Kathryn Mootz (2015) and John Stephen Jones (2016). John Stephen Jones also won The Ruth and Calvin Brundrett “Jeremiah 29:11 Award” in 2016. Last year, Emily Nelson won The Wayne and Avon Langston “Courage Award”.
